Finding a new home for the Cannon Street Bell Tower

coupolaschool

The Lymington Society has today launched a consultation exercise to find a new home for the Victorian bell tower or cupola from the Cannon Street School which was demolished several years ago in controversial circumstances after a long campaign by the Society to save this historic building.

Having failed to save the Cannon Street School the Society was however successful in saving the most iconic feature of the building – namely the ornate cupola or bell tower feature which the Society has kept in storage since then.

The Society would now welcome suggestions for a new home for this reminder of our Victorian past. Ideally it could be incorporated into a new building scheme and applications for possible sites from developers or architects would be welcomed.  Any suggestion should be with the agreement of the owners of the suggested site.

Suggestions can be made through the form below or by e-mail at info@lymsoc.co.uk

Wine Tasting and Talk: Tuesday 28th January 2014

vineyardTim Phillips is the man behind a new local vineyard that has been constructed in the walled garden of what was Ramley House in Ramley Road, Pennington. Starting when he purchased the garden in 2007, Tim tamed the 200 year old walled garden which had been unused for up to 30 years and had his first crop in 2010. Tim will describe his journey from the derelict walled garden to today’s flourishing vineyard. Hopefully Tim will be able to bring wines from his vineyard for us to taste. A visit to the vineyard will be included in the event on a date to be arranged.

Cost is £5.00 to include the Wine Tasting and Tour of Vineyard.

Revised development proposal for Travis Perkins site approved

TPBy 15 votes to 3, the modified proposal for 23 residential units on the Travis Perkins site on Grove Road was approved by the NFDC Planning & Development Control Committee on 13th November 2013.

The Society’s planning specialist, Nick King, attended the committee meeting to reiterate the Society’s objection to both the original proposal and the revised version.

The approved development will contain 23 dwellings comprised of 2 three-storey blocks of 5 flats; 1 three-storey terrace of 3 houses; a garage block with ancillary studios over; 1 terrace of 7 houses; one pair of semidetached houses; 1 house; access; parking; landscaping; bin/cycle store

Details of the Society’s objections can be found HERE:

Travis Perkins site – update 09.10.2013

TPNFDC has refused a proposed development of 25 dwellings (application 13/10709). Main reasons for refusal: inappropriate to its context, fails to respond positively to local distinctiveness, unacceptably poor design quality. See full NFDC reasons for refusal: http://web3.newforest.gov.uk/ConnectAcolaidWebExternal/GetDocumentContentExternal.aspx?documentId=658423&filename=Decision+Notice.pdf

However, at the same time as submitting 13/10709, the developer’s agent submitted a similar proposal for a development of 23 dwellings without the 2 bungalows (13/10710). We objected on similar grounds i.e. failure to respect local distinctiveness, over-development and concerns about proposed access road from Grove Road.

Status: NFDC says they intend to advertise amended plans with a view to taking the application to November Committee (email from NFDC case officer 20.09.2013). See revised plans:
