This posting on the website is to inform members of the current status of the St Barbe Museum planning application and the Lymington Society’s proposed response to it. It follows the meeting that took place on 10 February on which there is a brief report. It also follows the submission of the formal planning application which needs to be responded to by 1 May. The Committee have already taken time to consider the application and the following is an analysis of that consideration in the Committee’s current views.

Trees screening Lymington Police Station

Police station trees thumbThe Society has a special interest in these silver maple trees as they were donated and planted by Society members in 1980.  A member living opposite became concerned recently that possible future closure of the station might result in the loss of the trees.  We enquired of the National Park Authority, now responsible for Tree Preservation Orders, and discovered that they were unprotected.  We are pleased to report that as a result there are now Tree Preservation Orders on all the trees in front of and beside the Police Station.  We are grateful to the member who drew our attention to the situation.

Burrard Neale Monument Planting Day 28th February

BN Monument Jan 2015-11The Burrard Neale 250 team would like to thank all those who took part in the very successful Volunteers Weekend on the 3rd and 4th of January when a working party from Lymington Society and Hampshire Conservation Volunteers (HCV) helped clear decades of overgrowth at the Burrard Neale Monument site.

Efforts now turn to starting the task of restoring the site with the planting of 1200 Holly and other plants including field maple, dogwood, hazel, dog rose and blackthorn. The first volunteer planting session takes place on the 28th of February and the Burrard Neale 250 team would appreciate help from Lymington Society members to make this day successful.

Experienced volunteers from the HCV will be on hand to advise so even the least experienced will be very welcome to come along and give a hand.

Please come prepared for a bit of digging in suitable clothing/boots etc. and meet at the Monument at 10.00 am on Saturday the 28th of February. Parking is available at the nearby Walhampton Gold Club or the car part of the Waggon and Horses on Undershore Road

Meeting to discuss new frontage for St Barbe Museum

St_Barbe_Museum1Lymington Society Committee have St_Barbe_Museum2been approached by the St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery who intend to submit a planning application for a new frontage to the Museum. (Click on either of the above images to see a larger version.)

The Committee have discussed this and, without passing any opinion one way or the other, feel that the right approach for this design would be for the Society to canvass the views of its members and to hold a meeting for a presentation by the Museum and/or the architect.

The St Barbe Museum would like this meeting relatively soon and we have arranged the meeting for:

10 February at 6:30 PM in the Fuller McLennan Hall at the Community Centre.

All members are welcome to attend and no tickets will be issued so just turn up on the night. If you have any questions do contact any Committee member.

Update 8th February 2015

In order to provide some background information on the application, a letter from David Rule Chairman of the Lymington Museum Trust can be found here. It is well worth reading this in advance of the meeting.

Don Mackenzie and the Social Committee. An appreciation.

Don YvonneThe primary purpose of the Society is to protect and enhance the character of Lymington. In that it needs the support of a wide base of members. Those members need to feel involved and that has always been achieved by the Lymington Society through social events.

The difficulty has always been to find someone to organise those events particularly in a predominantly male committee. For the past several years Don has fulfilled that role admirably with his ability to encourage people to involve themselves with events and his unerring nose for the sort of events, subjects and venues which will attract people.

Under his guidance those events have fallen into a pattern of the summer garden party at various venues and the Stanwell House Christmas party and numerous lectures and events in between. Notable events have been visits to the Berthon Boat Company and a series of talks and exhibitions at the St Barbe Museum

These events did not happen by themselves. They need research and organisation of dates and venues and invitations and the food and drink and last but not least the clearing up afterwards, hopefully assisted by other members of the committee, but ultimately Don’s responsibility supported by Yvonne.

In spite of Don’s threats we have not lost his services as a committee member yet, but with the arrival of Pam Morrisey on the committee recently she has accepted the challenge to run the social committee, and over the past two or three months has played herself into the role with Don’s help and will be taking over the organisation of social events from now on.

The Committee and the Society are extremely grateful to Don and Yvonne for having carried out this role for many years so effectively and with such dedication.
