hms_victory_bandThe Burrard-Neale 250 Project Team is pleased to announce an exciting concert of military music and popular tunes presented by the HMS Nelson Royal Naval Volunteer Band, directed by Colour Sgt Nigel Jones.

The event will take place on Wednesday 16th September at St Thomas Church and will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Admiral Sir Harry Burrard-Neale (1765-1840). Sir Harry is Lymington’s most eminent and distinguished son and famous naval hero from the time of Nelson. He achieved national acclaim by helping to prevent a mutiny which could have sparked a national revolution along the lines of the French Revolution. He was both Mayor of Lymington and the town’s MP for many years.

“What a way to run a railway” – or a bus service.

Bus station closedIn April, following the announcement by the bus company that they intended to close the bus station in Lymington High Street, we made contact with Hampshire County Council, the responsible authority for bus services locally and attended a meeting hosted by the Community Rail Partnership at Lymington Town Railway Station on 22nd April with representatives of HCC, NFDC and Go South Coast Ltd, the local bus operator.

The bus station has now closed without adequate alternative arrangements being clearly publicised.

Andrew Wickham, Chief Executive of Go South Coast and his operations manager Lymington came to meet committee members of the Society on June 2nd in Lymington.

The Society committee members pointed out that the bus station had been closed with very few notices of the alternative arrangements put up for the information of the public, particularly at the old bus station where one would now arrive to find some parked buses but no departures.

Trees screening Lymington Police Station

Police station trees thumbThe Society has a special interest in these silver maple trees as they were donated and planted by Society members in 1980.  A member living opposite became concerned recently that possible future closure of the station might result in the loss of the trees.  We enquired of the National Park Authority, now responsible for Tree Preservation Orders, and discovered that they were unprotected.  We are pleased to report that as a result there are now Tree Preservation Orders on all the trees in front of and beside the Police Station.  We are grateful to the member who drew our attention to the situation.
