December 16th Christmas Drinks Party – Stanwell Hotel 6.00 – 8.00pm

Once again our big social event of the year will be held at Stanwell House Lymington High Street. As usual Stanwells will be serving a delicious selection of canapés and wines and the Committee look forward to meeting as many members as
possible.

Members are welcome to bring quests.

Members are invited to a guided tour of this fascinating exhibition of wood engravings by the world famous print maker and artist Colin See-Paynton.

Colin uses his knowledge and meticulous observational skills to construct engravings that link species and their natural habitats.Meet at 6pm in the Gallery for refreshments before our guide for the evening Steve Marshall gives us an in depth tour of the exhibition.

Chairman’s Address

Thank you all for coming. Last year I described 2012 as a welcome rest from all those major controversial issues such as the Ferries, Redrow and Wetherspoons. In 2013 again the business of the Society has been more routine.

One feels a bit guilty for not being in a maelstrom of controversy with public meetings being called to resolve important planning issues, but really the business of an amenity society should normally be a programme of watchfulness over planning matters and keeping up the interest of its membership and the population of the town generally in preserving and maintaining what we feel best reflects Lymington itself.

Visit to Tim Phillips’ Vineyard at Ramley House – NOW 26th July

Following the very successful and fascinating talk on Tim’s project to turn the hugely overgrown walled garden of Ramley House into a functioning vineyard we are now planning the follow up visit to the see the results of all Tim’s endeavours.

As set out above this has now been moved to the following Saturday the 26th and I would be obliged if you could spread the word that this is now taking place a week later.

The entrance will be sign posted on the day so make your way to Ramley House in Ramley Road at about 1.45 pm on the 26th

There is no fee for this event and no tickets are needed – Just turn up.

There is very limited parking outside and Tim has asked if people try and car share if at all possible. Tim has asked that you park in the gravel layby next to the bus stop where there is parking for about 6 cars.

Solent Music Festival 11th-14th September 2014

The 2014 Festival taking place in St Thomas Church in Lymington this September. Sam Haywood, the artistic director and resident pianist has invited exceptional musicians to perform with him. The Endelion Quartet will play on Friday and on Saturday. On Saturday the programme includes a festival commission from child prodigy Alma Deutscher. On Sunday we welcome back clarinetist Katherine Spencer and the Galliard Ensemble. Fringe events include late jazz at Stanwell House Hotel, no tickets are required for this BUT a reservation is necessary for the dinner.

Lymington Society AGM 24th March 2014

The Lymington Society AGM is the main business meeting of the year when Members get a change to stand for the Committee or nominate fellow members to the Committee. Election of officers takes place for the year ahead and following a report from the Chairman on the Society’s activities in the year; current important issues are debated and discussed.
Following the business section of the meeting, we are pleased to announce that Colm McCarthy the Lymington and Pennington Council Economic Development Officer will give a Talk. Originally brought in to boost the Sea Water Baths, Colm has now been given the task of helping to revitalise the economy of the town and will set out his plans for achieving this task. No charge for this meeting. Refreshments from 7.00pm. Meeting starts at 7.30pm

Finding a new home for the Cannon Street Bell Tower

The Lymington Society has today launched a consultation exercise to find a new home for the Victorian bell tower or cupola from the Cannon Street School which was demolished several years ago in controversial circumstances after a long campaign by the Society to save this historic building.

Having failed to save the Cannon Street School the Society was however successful in saving the most iconic feature of the building – namely the ornate cupola or bell tower feature which the Society has kept in storage since then.

The Society would now welcome suggestions for a new home for this reminder of our Victorian past. Ideally it could be incorporated into a new building scheme and applications for possible sites from developers or architects would be welcomed. Any suggestion should be with the agreement of the owners of the suggested site.
